Legate House, Belgrade 2018

The House of Legates, an institution of importance for the city of Belgrade, was founded in 2004 by the Assembly of the City of Belgrade. The seat of the institution is Knez Mihailova street number 46.

Created as the result of a multi-decade initiative of artists, intellectuals, experts and donors, the House of Legacies aims to solve the complex problem of legacies* and gifts made to Belgrade from 1955 to the present day.

The House of Legacies will take over the permanent care of legacies, working both on the legal regulations in the field of legacies while respecting the legator's will, and on improving the conditions of care, preservation and protection of legacies, their opening to the public, their popularization, and on the presentation of items from legacies in accordance with modern museological standards.

As an institution, the House of Legates is dedicated to stimulating and restoring the institution of giving. Another important goal of its establishment is the reception of new legacies and gifts.

Special care will be given to future legacies that will be presented to the city of Belgrade, based on new criteria and a special Rulebook on their reception, as well as the reception of individual gifts and smaller collections.

This would further protect the valuable legacy of important personalities and, in a wider field, encourage donation, which in Belgrade, due to the long-term unresolved situation in this field, practically died.

The House of Legacies will systematically take care of all movable** and immovable*** legacies donated to the Assembly of the City of Belgrade.

This includes their reconstruction, adaptation, technical and museological equipment, protection of art objects, as well as making a decision on a possible new or additional use of legacies, all in cooperation with the institutions to which legacies were entrusted for safekeeping and care until the House of Legacies was formed.

Based on the concept of the work of the House of Legates, its primary interest is the collection of art artifacts related to the 20th and 21st centuries, artists, collectors or personalities who have left a significant mark in cultural, scientific and public life through their activities, as well as anonymous donors of valuable collections.
