Pedagogical Museum, Belgrade 2018

The Pedagogical Museum is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in Serbia. The School Museum was founded in 1896 at the initiative of the Teachers' Association, with the aim of collecting and preserving teaching materials and all other items of historical importance for primary schools and teachers. During more than a century of existence, several tens of thousands of textbooks, teaching aids, photographs and documents have been collected that bear witness to the work of Serbian schools from the beginning of the 19th century until today. During its existence, the Museum moved several times, and since 1969 it has been housed in the building of the Belgrade Realka, built around 1840, i.e. in the house of Cvetko Rajović, the then manager of the Belgrade town.

Dimitrije J. Putniković (1859-1910), teacher and textbook writer, was the first manager of the Museum. The opening ceremony was held in the Elementary School near the Cathedral Church on November 24, 1896 (according to the old calendar), on the day of the centenary of the birth of Jovan Gavrilović. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Museum contained valuable documents for the history of Serbian schooling and education, but during the First World War, everything was destroyed.

After the war, from 1925, the Museum continued its work in the building of the Teacher's Dormitory where, in three large rooms, an exhibition was opened with exhibits that were classified according to the subject. Its visitors, students and teachers, could see insect collections, zoological preparations, teaching pictures, drawings, relief maps and student works.

In the Second World War, the Museum was destroyed again. After the war, in 1947, the Museum was reconstructed and housed in the building of the Sveti Sava Elementary School. The new concept of work and organization of the Museum began to be implemented after 1960, when the School Museum changed its name to the Pedagogical Museum. The work of the Museum was divided into several sectors, and the museum collections became richer. During that period, the Museum established contact with similar institutions in Zagreb and Ljubljana, and together with them, for many years, published the "Collection of the History of Schooling and Education". In 1969, the Museum was moved to the Realka building, where, in 1975, a permanent exhibition entitled "Ten Centuries of the Serbian School" was opened. Working conditions became much better, which influenced the Museum to become a modern cultural institution.

Now, the Museum collects objects and documents related to the history of education, education and pedagogy in Serbia. The Museum's expert team presents the results of its research through the permanent exhibition and thematic exhibitions, as well as through catalogs and publications. Namely, at the end of 2007, a new permanent exhibition was re-opened in the Pedagogical Museum, which in an attractive way points to the complex topic of the historical development of schooling and education in Serbia and among Serbs from the very beginning to the present day.

In addition, the Museum organizes lectures, seminars, workshops and other forms of cultural and educational events.

The Pedagogical Museum stores more than 50,000 objects, i.e. books, photographs, teaching aids, documents and other materials, which represent a treasure trove of information about the development of schooling and education in Serbia. All exhibits are grouped into several collections: Collection of textbooks and pedagogical literature, Collection of school equipment and teaching aids, Collection of school documentation and media library, and Collection of archival material and documents. We should also mention the publishing activity of the Museum, i.e. publications dealing with the development of education in Serbia and among Serbs in a period longer than two centuries.
