Project MISSION4.0 of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Belgrade, supported by the Program for the Development of Projects in the Field of Artificial Intelligence of the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia

In 2019, the Government of the Republic of Serbia adopted a strategy for the development of artificial intelligence in the Republic of Serbia for the period from 2020 to 2025, and at that time it was one of the 26 countries in the world and the first country in Southeast Europe to start work on the strategic approach of its development. The final result of the application of this strategy should be reflected in economic growth, the creation of a more competitive economy, the improvement of scientific and professional personnel, as well as the development of skills for the jobs of the future, because according to the predictions of the McKinsey Global Institute, by 2030, around 70% companies will apply at least one of artificial intelligence technique. In order to achieve the intended goals, one of the conclusions is that support to scientific research institutions should be more significant, but it should also be possible to make investment in science competitive. Based on the adopted strategy, in 2019, the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia issued a call for participation in the Program for the Development of Projects in the Field of Artificial Intelligence.

One of the 12 projects supported within the mentioned Program, and the first project of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Belgrade, is the project MISSION4.0 (Deep Machine Learning and Swarm Intelligence Based Optimization Algorithms for Control and Scheduling of Cyber-Physical Systems in Industry 4.0), whose manager is Professor Dr. Zoran Miljković. According to the aforementioned strategy, the main impact of the application of artificial intelligence will be reflected in the improvement of work productivity up to 40%, the development of "smart machines" in the form of systems that will be able to learn and make decisions independently, and finally, the spread of innovations in various sectors of the economy. The foregoing indicates that artificial intelligence is a key factor in the further development of Industry 4.0 precisely because of its distinct multidisciplinarity. The concept of Industry 4.0, although it originated in Germany, still did not fully cover one segment related to the cognitive robots in the internal transport of materials. In this regard, the MISSION4.0 project is conceived as a multidisciplinary project that includes optimization during integrated planning and scheduling of technological processes in dynamic conditions with the aim of improving the productivity of technological systems; then, intelligent control of mobile robots based on stereo machine vision, which belongs to the category of "smart machines"; and deep machine learning in order to achieve secure communication (cyber security) within the cyber-physical systems of Industry 4.0. As one of the current topics, when artificial intelligence is mentioned, is related to its impact on the labor market, the project proposal also included research regarding the ethical principles that the implementation of this technology brings.

Verification of the proposed multidisciplinary approach will be verified on self-developed mobile robotic systems RAICO (Robot with Artificial Intelligence based COgnition) and DOMINO (Deep learning based Omnidirectional Mobile robot with INtelligent control), developed in the Laboratory for Industrial Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, Department of Production Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Belgrade.
