Can a piece of graphite from a pencil light up? With physical chemistry, anything is possible! In the past, before the existence of the light bulb, many candles, torches or oil lamps were needed after sunset to illuminate the room. In the middle of the 18th century, Sir Joseph Swann and Thomas Edison, independently of each other, managed to create the first version of the light bulb that could be practically used. Graphite was one of the first materials used in light bulbs, and how graphite can actually light up our room, find out in our laboratory!
