Mandarins in water

I've always wondered why a ship doesn't sink when it's so heavy. But it's not about weight, it's about density. Place one unpeeled and one very carefully peeled tangerine in a bowl filled with water. A peeled tangerine sinks, an unpeeled one floats. The space between the shell and the center of the tangerine reduces its overall density, so it cannot sink.
